What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are cosmetic restorations used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape and appearance. These porcelain caps can be customized to match the shape, size, and color of your natural tooth so it’ll blend seamlessly with your smile.

Because our crowns are made from porcelain, you can enjoy much more benefits than those offered by traditional metal crowns. For example, porcelain crowns last much longer, and won’t leak and stain your teeth over time. You can rest assured knowing that the restoration you receive from us is durable and long-lasting!

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns do much more than restore your tooth’s appearance. This popular restorative treatment comes with a host of other benefits, such as:

  • Durable and long-lasting material
  • Quick and minimally-invasive procedure
  • Strengthens and preserves teeth
  • Replaces worn-out or missing fillings
  • Protects teeth from cavities and bacteria

When Are Dental Crowns Necessary?

Dr. Gaeta may recommend dental crowns to patients suffering from:

  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Worn-down or weakened teeth
  • Severely decayed teeth
  • Teeth treated with a root canal

Dental crowns may also be used in tandem with other procedures such as dental bridges. However, dental crowns aren’t for everyone. To learn if you’re a good candidate for crowns, schedule a consultation with Dr. Gaeta at our Kailua-Kona office by contacting us at (808) 329-3314.

The Dental Crown Process

Crowns are placed onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth’s new outer surface.

At Frederic Gaeta, DDS, we can place your dental crowns in just two appointments at our Kailua-Kona office.

Initial Consultation and First Appointment

You’ll first have a consultation with Dr. Gaeta where he’ll determine if dental crowns will be the most effective treatment for you. During this time, he’ll also address any questions or concerns you may have.

After the consultation, Dr. Gaeta will thoroughly clean your tooth, removing any decay. He’ll then file and prepare your tooth so that your dental crown fits snugly over your natural tooth. Before this process, he’ll administer a local anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain.

He’ll then take a detailed impression of your teeth in order to create your customized restorations. A temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth from bacteria until you return for your second appointment.

Second Appointment

You’ll return to our Kailua-Kona office two weeks after your first appointment for your final fitting. Dr. Gaeta will first remove your temporary crown and conduct a thorough cleaning. Then, he’ll place your custom-made porcelain crown, making any necessary adjustments so it’ll fit comfortably in your mouth.

Finally, he’ll attach the crown using a dental-grade adhesive to ensure its stability. You’re then ready to showcase your new smile!

Do dental crowns hurt?

Dr. Gaeta will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area before the procedure. This will ensure you feel no pain while he works to shape your tooth for your dental crown.

You may feel some slight discomfort once the numbness fades, but it can be easily managed using cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers.

How long do dental crowns last?

Typically, dental crowns can last between 10 to 15 years with the proper care. This includes brushing and flossing twice per day, as well as keeping up with biannual visits to our Kailua-Kona office for regular cleanings and examinations. Not only will it keep your crown in good shape, but your overall oral health, too!

How do I care for dental crowns?

Dental crowns don’t require any additional care aside from your regular oral hygiene routine. However, it’s best to avoid eating sticky or crunchy foods a few days after the procedure, as they may irritate the area and lead to setbacks in your treatment.
